Role: SQL Server DBA
Location: Remote (Occasional travel to NYC)
Duration: 6-12 months Contract
Key Responsibilities: - dminister, maintain, and optimize Microsoft SQL Server environments (2016, 2019, 2022) deployed for clients.
- Work directly with cross-functional team to design, configure, and implement database solutions aligned with company requirements.
- Manage database performance, tuning, indexing, and optimization for mission-critical applications.
- Implement and maintain high availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) solutions such as Always on Availability Groups, Failover Clustering, and Log Shipping.
- Ensure data security and compliance with CJIS, NIST, and New York City data protection policies.
- Perform database backup, recovery, patching, and upgrades with minimal downtime.
- Collaborate with application development and infrastructure teams to optimize database design, schema, and queries.
- Support incident response and root cause analysis (RCA) in collaboration with client's stakeholders.
- Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), technical documentation, and audit-ready reports.
- Participate in on-call support rotation and ensure high service availability for critical police systems.
Required Skills and Experience: - 7+ years of hands-on experience as a SQL Server DBA in enterprise or government environments.
- Strong knowledge of SQL Server 2016/2019/2022, T-SQL, indexing, and query optimization.
- Expertise in HA/DR implementations, replication, and clustering.
- In-depth understanding of database security, encryption, authentication (Kerberos, AD integration), and audit logging.
- Familiarity with PowerShell scripting and automated database maintenance tasks.
- Strong understanding of Windows Server, Active Directory, and Azure-based database integrations (Azure SQL Managed Instance, SQL on Azure VM).
- Experience working under compliance frameworks such as CJIS, NIST 800-53, or FISMA.
- Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and communication skills with cross-functional teams.
Preferred Qualifications: - Experience supporting law enforcement, defense, or public sector clients.
- Familiarity with data replication and reporting services (SSIS, SSRS, SSAS).
- Knowledge of Azure DevOps pipelines and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) for database deployment.
- Certifications preferred:
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate (DP-300)
- Microsoft Certified: SQL Server Database Administrator (MCSE/MCSA)
- CJIS Security Awareness Certification (or ability to obtain).
Education: - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
