This role is bilingual/biliterate in Spanish and English. A test will be administered prior to employment.

This role will cover San Luis Obispo Coastal Schools.

As a Family Advocate, you will play a crucial role in coordinating referrals, participating in School Student Study Teams, and engaging in weekly case management meetings. Your work will involve conducting needs assessments, developing and following up on case plans, and providing early intervention through in-home support. This role offers the opportunity to make a real difference by providing a realistic framework focused on prevention and early intervention.

Qualifications:
  • Family Advocate I: Associate's degree in child development, Family Studies, Psychology, Social Worker, or Health Education and two years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; or a high school diploma with two years of experience in the social services field.
  • Family Advocate II: Bachelor's degree in child development, Family Studies, Psychology, Social Worker, or Health Education and two years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience and one year of experience in the social services field.
  • Depending on the department assigned, a valid California driver's license, a current DMV driving record, and proof of insurance may be required to fulfill job-related travel. Reasonable accommodations will be considered in accordance with applicable laws.
As a Family Advocate you will:
  • Conducts family needs assessments and creates individualized case plans.
  • Manages ongoing support in health, nutrition, education, child development, and parenting.
  • Helps families identify needs, set goals, and access services.
  • Promotes self-sufficiency through follow-ups and skill-building.
  • Builds trust through home visits and direct support for daily living and social skills.
  • Connects families to resources through strong community partnerships.
  • Facilitates SAFE program enrollment and orients parents.
  • Participates in SAFE meetings and Student Study Teams for at-risk students.
  • Coordinates referrals and services with SLCUSD staff.
  • Encourages parent involvement in school events, IEPs, and workshops.
  • Serves on SARB and CAPSLO Advocate Team committees.
  • Addresses attendance issues as a liaison between schools, families, and students.
  • Develops strategies with schools to reduce absenteeism and educates parents on attendance importance.
  • Tracks and analyzes attendance using district databases.
  • Stays updated on local resources and promotes family engagement in community activities.
  • Connects families to parenting classes and support groups.
  • Ensures families are included in decision-making.
  • Follows up to confirm services are delivered and effective.
  • Maintains accurate service and attendance records.
  • Refers families to additional community resources.
  • Frequently travels for meetings, agency visits, and home visits.
