We had a lot of action this weekend. April 18, 2015, with UFC on FOX 15 from Newark, New Jersey where we saw nothing but action and some questions that still aren’t answered yet, but they will be. 8 of 11 fights were finishes and the other fights didn’t let us down at all. So lets get into the main card of fights.
To start off the night in the Women’s Strawweight Division was Paige VanZant taking on Felice Herrig. This fight was getting so much hype because of these ladies talking some major trash on each other. But it was VanZant who came to fight and to prove that she isn’t a one “trick pony” as Herrig said she was. VanZant was in dominating form from the start to the finish of the fight where she won by UD.
In the Featherweight Division we had Cub Swanson taking on Max Holloway in a fight most thought Swanson was going to dominate and take the win with all his fight experience. But, that wasn’t the case for Holloway at all who is really starting to come into his own. It was all Holloway in this fight with great range, combos, and really putting it together as an MMA fighter. In the third round, Holloway got a great combo and saw his shot to get a guillotine choke onto Swanson for the win.
In the co-main event of the evening we saw Ronaldo Souza taking on Chris Camozzi. This is the second time these two men have fought each other and in the same situation as they were in their first matchup. Souza was supposed to fight another fighter but he had to pull out because of injury. Camozzi, who was released from the UFC last year, stepped up on 6 days notice to come and fight Souza. I have to say this for Camozzi for stepping up on late notice was really a good move but a dangerous one at the same time. The fight began and we saw them both trade a bit but it was Souza doing what he does best with his ground skills by taking down Camozzi and getting a slick armbar move for the win in the first round. This is Souza’s 6th win in the UFC.
Now onto the main event,Luke Rockhold vs Lyoto Machida. Everyone was saying this fight will be for the number one contender spot and the winner will take on the champion of the UFC World Middleweight Championship. And we won’t know who that man will be until May 23.
Both of these men are former champions and are looking to get a chance to regain a title. Machida is a former UFC World Light-Heavyweight Champion and former title challenger for the UFC World Middleweight Championship, as well. Rockhold is the last man to be the Strikeforce World Middleweight Championship and looking to get the UFC title.
When the bell rang we saw Machida being himself by waiting and moving around but it was Rockhold with his combos and take downs that got Machida off his game. The first round was all Rockhold with the ground game and just using all his skills to beat down Machida. In the second round we saw more of the same thing but Rockhold got Machida flat on his stomach and Rockhold got his hands right for the rear naked choke.
