On March 14, 2015 we had UFC 185 in Dallas, Texas for two title fights and a number one contender spot. I have to say that all the fights were amazing and we saw some great comebacks and nothing but action. So, lets get it going!
With the first 3 fights of the preliminaries on UFC Fight Pass, we saw action-packed TKO’s. In the first match of the night in the women’s Bantamweight division we saw Germaine de Randamie def. Larissa Pacheco with a great combo and finish. Then the Lightweights came to fight debuting with Joseph Duffy def. Jake Lindsey in the first round with another TKO finish. If you don’t know who Joseph Duffy is he is the last man to beat Connor McGregor. The flyweights were up next when Ryan Benoit def. Sergio Pettis by TKO in the second round. After the fight Benoit kicked Pettis in the butt after the fight ended and the bell rang. Benoit knew he messed up and was very sorry for what he did and knew he was in trouble.
Next up were the free prelims on FX with the big boys in the Heavyweight division. There we saw Jared Rosholt def. Josh Copeland by TKO in the third round. These 2 men were throwing some leather and weren’t letting this fight go to the judges. In the only submission of the night, Beneil Dariush was showing that his striking was on point by out striking Daron Cruickshank who is one of the best at striking. However, once they got ono the ground Dariush, got the best of Cruickshank.
The Middleweights were up next with Elias Theodorou def. Roger Narvaez in the second round by TKO but it was the first round that all of us knew something was wrong with Narvaez. This occurred when Theodorou threw a nasty body kick that Narvaez blocked with his arm. In doing that, his arm was broken but Narvaez is tough and wanted to keep fighting. Great fight and lots of heart from Narvaez.
In the last prelim with the Lightweights, it was Ross Pearson def. Sam Stout in the second round with a great combo that floored Stout. Pearson knew this was going to be a tough fight. This fight was personal for him because Pearson knew he was fighting for his job as well as keeping his title dreams alive.
Now onto the PPV main card. The Flyweights were the first fight on the PPV where Henry Cejudo made the weight limit at 125lbs. so there was no scrapping this fight. The fight was a scrap for sure when Cejudo def. Chris Cariaso by UD. I was happy to see this fight and see that Cejudo can make the weight.
In a fight that saw two Heavyweights who love to throw heavy hands and combos, we saw Alistair Overeem def. Roy Nelson by UD. Next up was the Welterweights with Johny Hendricks def. Matt Brown by UD. This fight didn’t really live up to the hype but Hendricks did look good with his weight. Dana White thinks that Hendricks should fight again before he gets his title match. I agree.
In the co-main event of the evening for the UFC Women’s World Strawweight Championship Joanna Jedrzejczyk def. Carla Esparza by TKO in the second round. This was a striker vs. grappler fight all the way and it was the striker that took the win and the title. Jedrzejczyk had great combos along with good ground defense but Esparza didn’t have anything for offense at all. I think after watching this fight that Esparza needs to work more on her striking.
In the main event of the evening we saw the crowning of a new UFC World Lightweight Champion with Rafael dos Anjos def. Anthony Pettis by UD. This was totally a one-sided fight with RDA taking it to Pettis during the whole fight with striking, ground and pound and mixing it up for the whole fight. In the first round RDA got a great combo that caught Pettis in the eye which we later learned that RDA broke a bone in Pettis’s eye socket. With his win, RDA became the 11th Brazilian to win a world title.
After the fight we learned that in addition to the broken orbital bone Pettis also has a concussion. With that, we won’t be seeing Pettis fight anytime soon. RDA suffered a slight tear in his knee that won’t require surgery but he will need time off to heal up a bit.
