Yet another bantamweight fighter has been been bitten by the injury bug and that fighter is Raphael Assuncao. While training and keeping himself ready, Assuncao has waiting in the wings just in case Dominick Cruz got injured again. He has been hoping to get his shot at the title first. Then he hears that Cruz has another ACL tear and Assuncao’s shot for the title looked like it was a reality. But shortly after finding out about Cruz we got late reports that Assuncao is out as well with a broken ankle.
Assuncao is on a 7-fight winning streak and a lot of people thought he should have gotten the next shot for the title over Cruz. I disagree with that. The reason I say that is due to the fact that Cruz never lost the title and he should have gotten his shot at the title. I think Assuncao should have been in line for a title fight after Cruz considering what he has been doing. Let’s not forget that Assuncao has beaten the champion, T.J. Dillashaw, while making his way to 7 victories in a row.
A lot of fight fans and people were saying that Assuncao vs. the former champion Renan Barao was the next fight to happen and to be a title contender match. I was hoping for that fight because we could have seen two top guys really fighting for their shot at the title. We won’t see it now. I hope to see you back in the cage soon, Raphael Assuncao, but please don’t push or rush too hard and hurt yourself even more.
