Good Tuesday fight fans. I hope you all had a great weekend with all the fights! I know I sure did. But there was one fight that I was more pleased to see than any other. It was a fight with former UFC Vet and title challenger Nate “The Rock” Quarry who came out of retirement to not just give a young fighter a chance, but also for a great cause. When I first heard about this story and then saw it unfold, I was proud to see a fighter like Quarry step up and be the man we all know him to be.
This past Saturday night in Portland, Oregon, Full Contact Fighting Federation had a main event that would make anyone stand up and be proud to be a fighter, coach, trainer, or fan. It was a great show with a lot of up-and-comers proving that they want to be true MMA fighters. But it is time for the main event for the FCFF World Championship.
We had Nate “The Rock” Quarry who has been retired from fighting since 2010. We all know Quarry from TUF 1 and that he is the most humble of all the fighters in the house. After the show ended, Quarry got to prove why he was the best fighter and did so with finishes and great sportsmanship. Quarry got a title shot for the UFC World Middleweight Championship against then champion, Rich Franklin. It was a good fight but it was Franklin with the TKO for the win. After that Quarry went on to have a good career in the UFC with a record of 12-5-0. In 2010 Quarry retired from MMA and went onto become a fight reporter for the former Spike TV’s MMA Uncensored. Now Quarry is working on a comic called Zombie Cage Fighter.
Now onto Quarry’s opponent. He is a young man who not only got to fight a vet of this sport but fought hard to get there. He is Jake “The Snake” Beckman who, at 19 years old, fought for the first time and for a title. Beckman is a young man who has Down syndrome, but that didn’t slow him down at all. Beckman began his path in MMA four years ago at Walkers MMA where Beckman’s mother got her son into the land of fighting. She worried for her child as any parent would but she let her son train and fight in order to give him the chance to live his dream.
This fight was called a “Special Exhibition Match” but in my eyes and many this was a true fight and one that will live forever for Beckman. When the bell rang Beckman took the fight right to Quarry with combos and take downs. Quarry the tough vet wasn’t going to make it easy on Beckman at all. Quarry used his range along with movement to get Beckman to play his game. However, Beckman got Quarry down on the mat and got a great heel hook onto Quarry for the tap and win. The crowd went nuts for Beckman and so did I. After the fight everyone asked how does it feel to be called a World Champion. “I really like the sound of it” said Beckman.
As I am writing this I am getting teared up cause this is what MMA, Boxing, Kickboxing, and Martial Arts is all about. I want to give a big thank you to Nate Quarry for doing this and an even bigger congratulations to Jake “The Snake” Beckman for his win and World Championship. Keep on Fighting Jake and we will see you down the road.
