I am so excited, fight fans! Just as I predicted, the superfight with Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr.is on! It has been tentatively scheduled for May 2, 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada at the MGM Grand. The venue has been set and now all we need is the word that the date has been finalized. I don’t know about you, but I am really happy that this fight is finally going to happen.
Promoter Bob Arum has said that Pacquiao has agreed to all the terms that Mayweather has asked of him. Pacquiao has given the Mayweather team 10 days to finalize the agreement. Also, I am learning now is that it will be a 60/40 purse split that would favor Mayweather. It is looking like $140 million for a Mayweather win. In order to pay the astronomical salaries the fighters will command, ticket prices will be scaled at an all-time high. The top ticket at the MGM Grand Garden is expected to go for $5,000 so that the arena can be scaled to produce a $40 million live gate. This would be the highest ticket sales in boxing history should this happen.
Arum wants to get Mayweather to the table ASAP so they all can work together for this fight. Mayweather has an exclusive contract with Showtime and Pacquiao is obligated to HBO. It is not immediately clear which network will broadcast the fight, though it is expected that both will be involved. That was the solution worked out in 2002, when Mike Tyson (Showtime) fought Lennox Lewis (HBO) in Memphis, Tennesee. I think that if all parties realize that this is the fight that needs to happen this year and are able to work together well, they will be generously rewarded.
How do you fans feel about this fight happening and who do you have to win?
