Saturday May 2, 2015 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada we had the superfight we all have been waiting for with Floyd Mayweather taking on Manny Pacquiao to unify the World Welterweight Championships. This fight was so hyped up that there were other fights on the card that were just as good as the main event. Let’s get this fight going.
In the first fight of the night we saw a great fight in the Junior Middleweight(154lbs.) division with Brad Solomon defeating Adrian Grandos by Split Decision. This fight had everything all boxing fans wanted to see with great combos and back and forth action. Also in the Junior Middleweight(154lbs.) division Chris Pearson defeating Said el Harrak by Unanimous Decision. This fight was all one-sided with Pearson controlling most of the fight. In the Super Middleweight division (168lbs) we saw Jesse Hart defeating Mike Jimenez by TKO in the 6th round and, man, Hart was looking to win and get a chance at the title soon. These were great undercard fights all the way and I can see all these men becoming headliners someday soon.
Starting off the PPV in the Featherweight(126lbs.) division for the WBO World Featherweight Championship we had defending champion Vasyl Lomachenko defeating Gamalier Rodriguez by KO in the 9th round. This was a battle all the way with both fighters winning rounds. It started to look like it was going to go to the judges but Lomachenko got stronger with every round and got Rodriguez with great combos. And that was it for Rodriguez in the 9th round. Also in the Featherweight(126lbs.) Leo Santa Cruz defeated Jose Cayetano by UD in the co-main event of the night. I would have hated to be the judges on this fight because there wasn’t a dual moment of fighting between these two men, but it was Cruz with his speed, power, and combos that got him the win. There are talks already about Lomachenkno vs. Cruz being the next title fight for the WBO World Featherweight Championship.
Now onto the main event of the night. This was the superfight of fights we all have wished for 5 years. This wasn’t just about these two men but also about unifying the WBA, WBC, WBO, and the Ring World Welterweight Championships. It was Floyd Mayweather defeating Manny Pacquiao by UD. However, in my eyes and in the eyes a lot of other fight fans, that wasn’t the case at all. We all know how both these men fight with Mayweather always moving, hitting combos, getting more points, and always staying away from danger at all times. Pacquiao is a southpaw fighter that likes to get in on you with body shots, combos to the body and head and he also has great power shots to go with it. The first 3 rounds saw Pacquiao being the aggressor and trying to get his combos going. But, Mayweather being the constant performer, he was ready and throwing more combos and not playing Pacquiao’s game at all. But what caught everyone’s eyes the most was Mayweather grabbing and holding Pacquiao after Mayweather would get some damage from Pacquiao. After 12 rounds of fighting it was all Mayweather for the UD and the titles. What is left for these two great fighters?
On a personal note, as a fighter and fan, I thought that Mayweather would have done more and tried to get the KO or TKO to prove to us that he is the true fighter that he always claims to be. Yes,I know this is Mayweather’s style and why he has always been that type of a fighter. But, this was Mayweather’s chance to prove how much of a fighter he is and really come out and fight. Pacquiao came to fight and was as ready as he could be, but after the fight, we all found out that Pacquiao was hurt. He was so hurt that he needs to have surgery on his shoulder very soon.
What did you fight fans think of the fights ?
