This just in fight fans: UFC World Light-Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones is checking into a drug rehab center!
On a random drug test taken on Dec. 4, 2014, well before his title defense against Daniel Cormier , Jones tested positive for benzoylecgonine, a primary metabolite of cocaine. This is not a drug that is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency so the NSAC could not halt Jones from fighting at UFC 182, which proved to be one of the biggest events in recent MMA history.
The UFC and Dana White is supportive of Jones choice to go into rehab and will keep supporting him and help Jones in anyway they can. This is what the UFC had to say about this:
“We support UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones’ decision to enter a drug treatment facility to address his recent issue. While we are disappointed in the failed test, we applaud him for making this decision to enter a drug treatment facility. Jon is a strong, courageous fighter inside the octagon, and we expect him to fight this issue with the same poise and diligence. We commend him on his decision, and look forward to him emerging from this program a better man as a result.”
Dana White said he is “proud” of Jones for doing something that will take a lot of courage and thinks that Jones will come back as a true and better champion. I think he will too because he is a champion. However, there has been a call from the media and fight fans to strip Jones of his belt. I ‘m not sure that he should lose his title because he will be putting himself, family, and his team through a tough time. He will be feeling guilty more then ever and his reputation will suffer immensely. Yes, drugs are bad and he is a role model. But, regardless of whether you hate or love him, he will have to answer to the fight world for actions.
The UFC has gotten a black eye on this one for sure. It should be interesting how they handle the negative publicity on this issue. Also, I’d like to know whether the UFC knew about the results of his drug test before the title match last Saturday. This should be very interesting to watch as this story continues to unfold.
I figure that a lot of people will be talking a load of crap about Jones’ drug use and I think Cormier may be one of the loudest. For now, Cormier released this short statement:
“I am aware of Jon’s test, and if there is anything to say it is this: there are a lot of people you impact, so please let’s get it together. Good luck on your rehab!”
What do you fight fans think ?
Update: 01-07-15: Here are the official results of Jon Jones’ drug tests obtained via a public records request! The urine in the first test was deemed too watery so they performed it again on a second urine sample.
