The injury bug has struck the UFC again in not one, but two main events. The first fight that has been cancelled is the UFC World Middleweight Championship fight between current champion Chris Weidman and Vitor Belfort in LA on the February fight card. The other main event that has been cancelled is Urijah Faber vs. Raphael Assuncao. That fight was to be a number one contender bantamweight fight that was set for March 21, 2015 in Brazil.
I was upset when I heard that UFC World Middleweight Champion, Chris Weidman, was hurt and had to pull out of his fight against number one contender, Vitor Belfort. It upset me because I have wanted to see this fight take place since they first came together.
Weidman had to defend his title for the first time against Lyoto Machida while Belfort cleansed his system after testosterone replacement therapy. The Weidman vs Machida match was a great fight that Weidman won by unanimous decision. Since then, Belfort and Weidman have held an interesting twitter war with each other in an effort to hype this fight up and to see who can gain the upper hand in the mind-game arena.
Now that this fight has been called off, Belfort has demanded to fight for either the interim title or for the Middleweight title. The UFC offered Belfort two fights and he said NO to both of them. So, for now, Belfort will have to wait for his shot at the UFC World Middleweight Championship title . But don’t worry fight fans there is still a main event championship fight in February. It will be in the UFC Women’s World Bantamweight Championship division between Ronda Rousey vs. Cat Zingano. That fight was moved from co-main to main event. In the co-main event we will have Raquel Pennington vs. Holly Holm. It’s ladies night in February and I am super excited about it because this is going to be about tough women battling it out all the way!
On March 21, 2015 we were scheduled to see Urijah Faber vs. Raphael Assuncao in Brazil. Assuncao has suffered another injury that has forced him him pull out of the fight. This time it is Assuncao’s ankle that is keeping him off this card and he won’t be ready to fight until much later in the year.
This fight was a rematch that hailed back to the WEC days where Faber got the win on Assuncao by submission. Both of these men have been neck and neck with one another since moving down to the Bantamweight division. Faber has been getting closer to fighting for the Bantamweight title and Assuncao is on a 7-fight winning streak. That set the stage for their number-one contender fight, but now it is going to have to wait. Faber is waiting for a replacement fighter and is still listed as the main event on this fight card. I don’t know who the UFC will get but I think that no matter who they get Faber isn’t going to look past them at all.
What do you think of all the injuries and changes to the cards ?
