Alexander Gustafsson was preparing to rematch with Ultimate Fighting Championship Light Heavy Weight Champion, Jon Jones, but was hurt during training. As a result, Daniel Cormier got the call to face Jones for the UFC Light Heavy weight Championship match on September 27th of this year. Jones and Cormier were really getting into each other’s heads and turning the heat up on the upcoming match when we found out this week that Jones has been hurt during training and now has to pull out of the September scheduled match. The UFC responded to this turn of events by cancelling the Flyweight Championship fight that was originally scheduled to happen on August 30 as the co-main event on that date. UFC also announced that the August 30th Flyweight Championship fight has been rescheduled for September 27th and will be the main event on that date thus replacing the Jones-Cormier fight.
The fight between Jones and Cormier has been rescheduled for January 3rd and now Gustafsson is upset over the news. He feels that he should be fighting Jones because he is the number one contender and he will be fully healed from his injuries well before that date. Apparently, due to the highly publicized recent pre-fight scuffle between Jones and Cormier, the UFC sees the the Jones – Cormier fight as a bigger draw than one between Gustafsson – Jones.
