Will Dominick Cruz ever stop getting bitten by the injury bug ? On second thought, perhaps we should call it the injury monster. He has suffered the same type of injury that kept him out of the cage for almost 3 years. When he finally came back, the former WEC/UFC World Bantamweight Champion looked like himself again and was ready to take on current UFC World Bantamweight Champion, T.J. Dillashaw.
On May 7, 2012 Cruz got hurt while filming for his season in TUF where he was supposed to fight fellow coach and rival, Urijah Faber. Cruz injured his left knee and found out that he needed surgery to repair a torn ACL. So the UFC created the Interim World Bantamweight Championship where Renan Barao fought and beat Urijah Faber in a 5-round war. While rehabbing his left knee, Cruz was getting ready to return to the cage to fight Barao and unify the titles. Instead, Cruz had to relinquish his belt cause suffered a second ACL tear in his left knee and went in for surgery. That injury kept him out longer and, without knowing when Cruz could come back, the UFC had no choice but to give Barao the full title of UFC World Bantamweight Champion. Everyone thought that Cruz would never come back and that his days as a fighter were over. The general assumption was that he would become a full time fight analyst. However, the fighter in Cruz wanted to get back in there and reclaim the title that he never really lost.
When Cruz came back to the cage on September 27, 2014 he took on Takeya Mizugaki who was on a 5-fight winning streak. It was obvious that Cruz didn’t miss a day of training in preparation for that fight. Cruz won the fight-of-the- night and earned the opportunity to fight Dillashaw for the title.
Cruz got hurt again while training but this time he tore the ACL in his right knee. Cruz has made it known that he was trying really hard to stay injury free by changing his diet, rehabbing his knee, and staying healthy. But, once again the injury bug has taken him out and now will need surgery again. There is no time frame for when Cruz will be ready to fight again.
With Cruz hurt, this is the chance for Barao to take the shot and try to get the UFC Bantamweight Championship back from Dillashaw. This injury has to be messing with Cruz mentally and may really be getting into his head. When a fighter has gone through two surgeries on his left knee and now has to undergo the same surgery on his right knee that has to make him think a lot about his future and seriously wonder if he can make another comeback.
