Cerrone vs Henderson in UFC Fight Night 59

01-14-15. By JP Scarano, Exclusively for TheFightWorld.Com

Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone really lives up to his nickname to the fullest and the reason I say that is cause it will be 15 days since his last fight and he is taking on one of his top rivals, Benson Henderson, on January 15, 2015 in Boston, MA.

Cerrone last fought on January 3, 2015 when he took on Myles Jury and beat him to make his winning record to 6 straight. When Eddie Alvarez pulled out for personal reasons the UFC had to look for a replacement to fight Benson Henderson. And who would say yes to the fight? None other then Cerrone!

If you know anything about Cerrone and Henderson you know this; they have fought 2 times before in the WEC Interim and World Lightweight Championships.  Henderson beat Cerrone both times. He won the first time by Unanimous Decision and the other by Submission. Since the UFC bought WEC and brought over all the lighter weight classes, we knew sooner or later these two men would fight again. Now is that time and we get to watch it for free on UFC Fight Night 59 as the co-main event of the evening.

Let’s take a better look at both these fighters. Let’s start with Benson Henderson who owns a record of 21-4-0 and is the former WEC and UFC World Lightweight Champion. Benson is looking to get back to his winning ways after his KO loss against the number one contender, Rafael dos Anjos.

Henderson has said a few times that the weight cut is getting to him and that he wants to leave the Lightweight division on a win before moving up to the Welterweight (170) division. A lot of people think he will do great there and is capable of making a real name for himself. When we first saw Henderson come into the WEC he was on fire and kept getting win after win until the current champion, Jamie Varner, got hurt and the WEC created an interim title. Henderson met Cerrone for the first time there and they had a war going on during all five rounds. Henderson took the belt and then faced Varner to unify the title. Henderson submitted Varner in the 3rd round. After that fight, Henderson defended the title against Cerrone and won by submission again in the first round.

When the WEC was putting on its last show in Arizona, where Henderson is from, he was defending the title for the last time against Anthony “Showtime” Pettis. These two men had a great fight but it was the “Showtime Kick” that stole the whole fight and garnered the win for Pettis.

Once in the UFC, Henderson went on a 3-fight winning streak and then got his shot for the UFC title. He beat the current champion, Frankie Edger, and had a great rematch with him.  Henderson went on to two more title defenses that positioned him as a dangerous champion. The rematch with Pettis took place but the outcome was the same as their last fight.  Pettis submitted Henderson in the first round. Henderson would bounce back with 2 impressive wins until he met Dos Anjos where he got KO’ed in the first round. Now Henderson is looking to go 3-0 against Cerrone and move up to a new division.

Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone isn’t just one of the most dangerous strikers in mixed martial artist, he is also an undefeated kickboxer, as well. His record of 28-0-1 in kickboxing and 26-6-0 (1) in MMA indicates that Cerrone isn’t a fighter who will ever back down. Since making the change to MMA, Cerrone has been one of the most sought after fighters in the Lightweight division. When he went back to the WEC he was undefeated with 1 no contest. He  looked like he would become a champion in no time at all when he fought the current champion, Jamie Varner. He lost to a technical decision (split) but that didn’t deter Cerrone. He came back better then ever with a submission win that earned him a interim title shot against Henderson. These two men put on a hell of a fight and we all knew that they would fight again and they sure did.

When Cerrone came back he did so with another submission win and earned a shot at the world title and a chance to avenge his loss to Henderson. Cerrone fell short in that bid when Henderson got him into a submission.

By the time  Cerrone came into the UFC he was already making a name for himself with his striking and dominant ways. But Cerrone would lose a few here and there but  he came back stronger and more determined to get a title shot. Now with 6 straight wins he has a chance to beat Henderson who has beaten him twice.

With a win against Henderson, Cerrone could be looking to get his shot at the UFC title. Everyone says that Cerrone is crazy for taking a fight 15 days after already fighting but Cerrone believes this; “Why wait around and not fight? Sooner or later I have to fight the best and now is my time to do so.” Cerrone is a man who lives the true cowboy way and with that he wants to keep his fighting career going as long as he can and get to the top.

What do you fans think of this fight ad who do you have for the win?  Cerrone or Henderson ?
